First issued in 1863 the Spencer rapidly became the favorite weapon of Union Cavalrymen. It fired a rim-fire metallic cartridge much like the bullets of today. Seven cartridges could be loaded in a tubular magazine which was then inserted in the stock. The Spencer weighed 8 1/4 pounds, measured 39 inches long, and fired a .52 caliber bullet. The Confederates referred to the Spencer as "that yankee gun that can be loaded on Sunday and fired all week."
