A throwing axe is an axe that is used primarily as a missile weapon. Usually, they are thrown in an overhand motion (much like throwing a baseball) in a manner that causes the axe to rotate as it travels through the air. A skilled axe thrower will rotate the axe exactly once throughout the flight so that the sharpened edge of the head will stick into the target (often a tree or other wooden object).
The Throwing Axe could be used as a weapon in two ways. As a hand-held weapon it was a lethal force, capable of cleaving helms, mail and shields, while a volley of thrown axes could disrupt an opposing force and allow a breakthrough in a shield wall. Replacement handle: OH2107 - $5
This axe is constructed of ZG55 Steel quenched in oil for a Rockwell Hardness rating of HRC 48-52.
