The classic pirate era in the Caribbean extends from around 1560-1760s. Pirates glory days was from the 1640s until the 1680s. Many pirate clans operated as limited democracies, demanding the right to elect and replace their leaders. The captain of a pirate ship was often a courageous fighter respected by his fellow pirates, rather than an elite member of society.
