This war axe of 11th century design is typical of axes used by men of war on the move. The blade itself is smaller and decorated with design holes which allows for a lighter carrying weight. Either side of the handle towards the blade sports a flashing of metal to retard wear and battle damage. The handle has a double-wound lanyard studded to the wood and a simple but effective protective endpiece.
German battle axe, 11th century, 30" long. 4 lbs.
